SCARBOROUGH, MAINE - Harmon's Market is pleased to present a body of work by Marvin Gates, entitled From Memory Short & Long. The subject of the 11 paintings in the "From Memory Short" series are the river (8) and the ocean (3) before humans first encountered them. This series was begun in 1996 and completed in 2024. And, the subject of the 6 paintings in the "From Memory Long" series is the Big Bang. This latter series was begun in 1993 and completed in 2024. The exhibition will be on view at 423 Black Point Road from July 19 through August 15, 2024.
Born in Kansas City, Missouri, in 1955, Marvin Gates attended Yale University, from 1973 to 1974; was apprenticed to the sculptor Richard Hollander (1974-76); attended the University of Kansas, studying with the sculptor Richard Gillespie (1976-77); received his B.A., in Art History, from The American University, Washington DC (1991); studied with Stanley Lewis and Glenn Goldberg at the Chautauqua School of Art (1991 and 1992, respectively); studied with Peter deFrancia at the New York Studio School (1992); and, received his M.F.A., in Painting, from Boston University (1996). One-person exhibitions include Harmon's Market, Scarborough ME (2018 & 2019); BARBARA, New York NY (2009, 2010, 2013 & 2014); Bowery Gallery, New York NY (2008); Dolphin Gallery, Kansas City MO (2006); Embry Gallery, Kansas City MO (1999); and Dorry Gates Gallery, Kansas City MO (1993). In 1998, Gates received the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Fellowship.
