In Between the Tides, my paintings on panel and on driftwood represent the sense of time and place that I explore on my daily walks on the beach in all seasons and weather.
30 of the 37 works on panel are close variations on the theme of waves and surf. The subject will be familiar to anyone who has made repeated visits to the beach: the experience of that which is absolutely predictable and, yet, unique. This specific series of paintings explores that duality.
The paintings on driftwood are also an extension of my walks: the selecting and lugging of the pieces of driftwood, as well as the determining their images, began out of and continued into the studio. Each piece’s distinctive grain required adjustments to my thinking about what the subject of the picture should be.
Finally, the ocean’s palette—found in the water, sand and sky—is surprising. Those colors are what I seek to portray.
